Throughout its history, Israel was a bridge between the great nations in the north, east, and west. As a result, it was the place of several major junctions, one of them being Megiddo. It was situated at a bottleneck at the Carmel Mountain range, at the crossing of the old trade road Via Maris from Egypt to Syria and the road from Akko through Shechem to Jerusalem. Repeatedly, different rulers fought over this strategic town. Perhaps that’s the reason why it is mentioned in the Book of Revelation as the place of the last great battle. We know it as “Armageddon,” which means “mountain of Megiddo.”
Today, Megiddo is the site of interesting excavations from different historical periods. Most well-known is a water-supply system with a tunnel connected to an underground spring outside the city. Since 2005, Megiddo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Bible Passage: Revelation 16:14-16
They are demonic spirits that perform signs, and they go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them for the battle on the great day of God Almighty. ‘Look, I come like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake and remains clothed, so as not to go naked and be shamefully exposed.’ Then they gathered the kings together to the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon
Prayer: „God, you are the Ruler over heaven and earth. You hold all of time and the whole universe in your hand. Over and over again, you have demonstrated your love and grace—in the Bible and throughout history, with your people. You are worthy of every trust. Amen.”
